Focus on the penguins undergoing molting, where they grow new feathers! An exhibition where you can learn about and experience molting will be held from July 30th. ~A collaboration project between Magellanic penguin "Ponzu" and Mizkan "Ponzu" will also be held.~
Penguins living in SUMIDA AQUARIUM undergo a molting season every year from June to October, when their entire body feathers are shed over 2~3 weeks. Because molting requires a lot of energy, penguins increase their food intake in advance and prepare for the period by about 1.5 times their normal body weight.
At the Penguin Academy, you can exhibit Magellanic penguin plush toys of varying weights, allowing you to experience the difference in "weight" between penguins before and after molting.
Additionally, the museum shop is selling a "Shedding Penguin Plush Toy" inspired by the unique molting form of the "Pine" (Pineapple), which is a distinctive form among sumi pens.
Additionally, from Thursday, August 20 to Monday, September 14, the fourth collaboration project will be held between Magellan Penguins "Ponzu" and Mizkan's "Ponzu." At the Penguin Cafe, limited-time collaboration drinks will be sold, and the museum shop will offer original design glasses.
